Materials & Craftsmanship

Is the glass supplied with the Exterior glass doors?

All Exterior glass doors are supplied without glass. Glass is quoted separately on request.

What types of wood do you work with?

We work with a full range of imported and locally sourced hardwoods to match your project's needs. Our selection includes:

  • Meranti
  • Kiaat
  • Ash
  • Oak
  • Beech
  • Maple
  • Rosewood
  • African Mahogany
  • Oregon Pine
  • Teak

If you have a specific timber in mind, we are happy to source it for you.

What is the difference between a mass-produced door and one from VJCo?

A mass-produced door is often made with cheap core materials and a thin veneer — designed for volume and short-term use. Our doors and furniture are constructed entirely from solid hardwoods using time-honoured joinery techniques. We handcraft each piece to last a lifetime (and beyond), making tomorrow's heirlooms today.

Do you varnish or paint the doors?

We offer two finishing options:

  • Client-applied finish:
  • Doors are supplied sealed with a clear primer to protect the timber from the elements so it doesnt warp. The final finish whether paint, stain, varnish, or oil finish is then applied by the contractor, builder, or homeowner once the door has been installed.

  • Vintage Joinery Co. finish:
  • We professionally finish doors using premium Osmo oil-based wood finishes. These penetrating oils enhance the timber's natural beauty while providing excellent protection against moisture and UV exposure. Unlike traditional film-forming finishes that can peel or flake over time, Osmo oil penetrates the wood fibres, making future maintenance straightforward. When the finish eventually requires maintenance, a fresh coat of oil can typically be applied without the need for complete stripping and refinishing, helping keep your door looking its best for years to come.

    Products & Services

What types of doors do you manufacture?

We develop 7 main types of doors depending on their opening systems:

    • Grand Entance doors
    • Pivot doors
    • Sliding doors
    • Folding doors
    • Double doors
Do you only do doors, or do you make other items?

We produce a wide range of architectural joinery and interiors. While we are renowned for our custom doors and windows, we also create beautiful solid wood furniture including:

    • Bespoke tables
    • Custom cabinets
    • Platform beds
    • Chairs and seating
    • Countertops

If it can be made from wood, we can craft it for you.

Do you take on heritage or historical restoration projects?

Absolutely. We have extensive experience accommodating the architectural woodwork requirements of historical buildings and heritage projects. Whether it involves hand-carved, richly detailed wood panels or replicating period-specific proportions, we work diligently to restore the past while meeting modern living standards.

Do you work with architects, interior designers, and contractors?

Yes. We collaborate directly with your design and construction team to ensure seamless integration. We are accustomed to working from architectural plans and specifications to deliver quality, reliability, and excellence on time.

    Technical Specifications

What are the standard sizes for your Exterior doors?

We produce everything from standard single entrance doors to oversized front doors. For exceptionally large or heavy doors, we assess each project individually to ensure the appropriate construction methods, hardware, and structural support are used for long-term performance and reliability. If you have a specific opening size or architectural design in mind, we'll manufacture a door tailored precisely to your requirements.

Why should Pivot Doors be under cover?

The cill of the frame is flat. If water hits the door, it runs down and blows into the house. We recommend pivot doors be installed under covered areas to protect against water ingress.

Do you supply door frames as well?

Yes. We manufacture custom timber door frames designed to complement your door and suit your project's specific requirements. Our frames are built to the same high standards of craftsmanship as our doors, ensuring a precise fit, long-term durability, and a seamless finished appearance.

Are your doors suitable for coastal areas?

Yes. Our exterior doors can be manufactured for coastal environments using suitable timber species and finished with premium exterior wood protection systems. Because coastal conditions expose timber to increased moisture, salt, wind, and UV radiation, regular maintenance is essential to preserve both the appearance and performance of the door. We are happy to recommend the most suitable timber and finish based on your property's location and level of exposure.

How do I get Glass, Hinges, etc. for my Pivot Doors?

Pivot frames, locks, hinges, handles, and glass will be quoted on request. Please contact us with your specific requirements.

    Process & Pricing

Why are your products more expensive than what I see at large manufacturers?

You are comparing an investment to a commodity. When you commission VJCo, you aren't paying for a standard, off-the-shelf unit. You are investing in:

    1. 100% Solid Hardwoods — rather than hollow cores or chipboard
    2. Expert Artisanship — developed over 10 years of dedicated experience
    3. Full Customization — made to fit your specific openings and design aesthetic
    4. Durability — a piece that will age gracefully and add value to your property for decades

In short, you are paying for quality that outlasts cheap alternatives and adds genuine, tangible value to your home.

What is the typical lead time for a custom door or piece of furniture?

Because we are a boutique studio that prioritises quality over volume, we limit the number of projects we take on. Lead times vary depending on the complexity of the design, the materials chosen, and our current schedule. We provide a specific timeline during the initial consultation, so we recommend contacting us early in your project planning phase.

    Do you offer installation services?

Yes. We offer a full-service solution. Our dedicated team handles the entire process — from the initial consultation and design right through to the final delivery and installation at your site in Cape Town and the surrounding areas.

Must we measure the openings before we cut doors?

Not a stupid question — many mistakes are made prior to actually making sure ALL the dimensions are correct for the unit to be installed. We always recommend confirming all measurements before production begins.

Do your prices include glass installation?

Glazing is typically completed on site after the door has been installed. This reduces the risk of damage during transport and ensures the glass is fitted securely and professionally.

    Additional Questions

Can you match existing wood finishes or colours?

Yes — we frequently match existing timber finishes to ensure seamless continuity in heritage homes and renovation projects. We use a combination of custom-mixed organic oils, waxes, and stains to achieve the exact colour and sheen you require.

We recommend bringing a sample or photograph of your existing woodwork to the consultation so we can perfectly match the tone and grain character.

How do I get a quote for my project?
